From Kickoff to Approved Samples in 40 Days:
How SVI Fast-Tracked NPI for an AI Data Center Cooling Project
Every AI data center depends on cooling that never stops. Behind each fan running around the clock is a motor drive, and behind each motor drive is a printed circuit board assembly that has to perform reliably under continuous load. When an OEM needs that electronics built fast, the speed of its EMS partner's new product introduction (NPI) process becomes a competitive advantage.
In March 2026, SVI started a new AI data center project with a global specialist in customized axial fans and impellers for industrial applications. In just 40 days, our team moved from project kickoff to sample shipment, and the samples passed customer testing.
The Project: Motor Drive PCBA for AI Data Center Cooling
SVI manufactures the PCBA for the motor drive that powers the fan impellers in the customer's data center cooling system. The customer owns the product and its design; SVI's role is to build it right, build it fast, and prepare it for volume.
Beyond the PCBA, SVI's scope covers:
- Functional testing (FCT) of the finished drive electronics
- Wire harness assembly
- Plastic parts for the drive
All work is built to REACH and RoHS requirements, so the drive is ready for the global markets where the customer's cooling systems are deployed.
Why the Customer Chose SVI as Its EMS Provider
The opportunity grew out of the relationship between SVI's Sales team and the customer. SVI was invited to the RFQ and won the project. The customer pointed to three reasons for the decision: a competitive overall offer, strong capability as a PCBA manufacturer, and an experienced technical team able to support the project from NPI and process development all the way through to production.
That last point matters. For an OEM, a partner that can handle early builds and high-volume manufacturing in one place removes a costly handover later in the product life cycle.
40 Days from Kickoff to Sample Shipment
The program started on a compressed schedule, with no slack between project kickoff and the date the customer needed samples in hand. SVI responded with a cross-functional team that worked as one unit:
- NPI Engineering prepared the build, process, and test setup.
- NPI Buyers secured components on a tight lead time.
- BD Program Management kept the schedule, the customer, and the internal teams aligned.
- Sales kept the relationship and expectations clear on both sides.
The result: the first NPI build was completed and shipped as samples in 40 days. The samples passed customer testing, and two NPI builds have now been completed and approved.
Engineering That Makes Every Next Build Smoother
Speed is only valuable if quality keeps up. During NPI, SVI's engineers ran a Design for Assembly (DFA) analysis on the drive electronics. The team identified the areas of the assembly that needed extra process monitoring and shared manufacturability feedback with the customer's design team.
This kind of early feedback is where an EMS partner adds value beyond the build itself. Each issue caught at the NPI stage is one that never reaches the production line, which protects yield, cost, and delivery once volumes ramp.
From NPI to High-Volume Production
One or two more NPI builds are planned while the customer finalizes the design. The project will then move into mass production at an expected volume of around 100,000 units per year.
This is the path SVI is built for: advanced engineering and NPI capability combined with globally scaled, high-volume manufacturing, so customers can move from product introduction to mass production within one integrated EMS partner.
“Leading this project with our cross-functional team has been a great experience. Seeing everyone come together, solve challenges, and deliver for the customer made this project special.”

What This Means for AI Data Center OEMs
AI infrastructure is scaling fast, and the electronics inside power, cooling, and monitoring equipment have to scale with it. For OEMs developing that equipment, this project shows what to look for in an EMS partner:
- An NPI process fast enough to absorb a compressed schedule without cutting corners
- Engineering feedback that improves manufacturability before volume production
- Test, harness, and plastic parts handled alongside the PCBA, not by separate suppliers
- A clear, single-partner path from first samples to high-volume production
The project also strengthens SVI's position in the fast-growing AI data center market, where we partner with OEMs who own the product and need reliable electronics built at scale.
